Tips on Choosing Sunglasses

Besides protecting your eyes from UV light, sunglasses are also key fashion accessories that you should own. With a wide range of designs and colours available, choosing the right pair may often be a challenge. Here’s a quick guide to help you out.

Tips on Choosing Sunglasses
  • 01Show a bit of eyebrows

When trying on a pair of sunglasses, always look into a mirror and check the distance between the frame and your eyebrows. The best balance is when a bit of your eyebrows can be seen. In addition, always go for a pair in which the top of the frame follows the line of your eyebrows.* For sunglasses with smaller lenses, simply position the sunglasses on your nose bridge at a comfortable height. There is no need to push the sunglasses higher just to cover your eyebrows as doing so would affect the visual balance of your face.

  • 02Create different looks with different frame sizes

Size of the sunglasses affects the overall look. Sunglasses with a smaller frame give a more luxury vibe while those with a bigger frame create the impression of a smaller face.

  • 03Choose a frame shape that is different from your face shape

Wearing sunglasses in a shape that is different from your face shape helps to create a better visual balance. Refer to the next section on choosing the right frame for your face shape.

Face ShapeChoosing Frame

The key to finding the right pair of sunglasses is to select a frame that suits your face shape. Here’s a guide for you based on 4 different types of face shape.

Round

Choose a pair of sunglasses with a rectangle frame to balance out the soft, circular face shape. The angular lines help to add more definition to your look.

Wearing sunglasses that are round or oval helps to offset the sharp jawlines, thereby creating a gentler and more well-balanced look. We also recommend going for a slightly oversized frame for those who want to further soften the silhouette.

SunglassesChoosing Lens Colour

When it comes to finding the right pair of sunglasses, lens colour is as important as the frame design. You can create an entirely different look with the same frame just by switching up the lens colour. Here’s a guide on the features of different lens colours.

Features of Colour Lens

  • Brown

Brown is the most popular colour for sunglasses as it is a close shade of our skin colour and this makes brown lenses the easiest to pull off compared to other colours. Brown lenses also tend to give off a more relaxed vibe.

    Functionality

Cut blue light while reducing glare and enhancing contrast

  • Grey

One of the most classic colours, grey lenses are chic and versatile. It is highly recommended for those who are trying out sunglasses for the first time.

    Functionality

Reduce glare evenly, thus preventing eye fatigue while providing true colour perception

  • Green

Green lenses make skin appear brighter and creates a more mellow image. Similar to grey lenses, they offer good colour perception and are recommended for first-time users.

    Functionality

Reduce glare and provide good colour perception, thereby making it an ideal option for all-purpose sunglasses

  • Blue

Blue lenses have a calming effect on the eyes and are comparatively more fashionable.

    Functionality

Cut down yellow and orange lights while reducing glare and contrast

  • Yellow

Yellow lenses allow you to make a bold fashion statement. Sunglasses with yellow lenses tend to give off a bright, pleasant vibe.

    Functionality

Provide greater visual clarity in low-light conditions

  • Pink

Pink lenses give your face the glow of good health. It is a cute colour to go for and definitely allows you to stand out from the crowd.

    Functionality

Increase visual contrast, making it great for rainy, cloudy days

Features of Functional Lens

  • Polarised lenses

    Polarised lenses

    Reduce glare from shiny surfaces;
    suitable for outdoor use

Polarised lenses reduce the glare from shiny surfaces such as the road, snow and water surface to give you a more comfortable vision while helping you see better. They are different from sunglasses which are essentially colour lenses that make your vision darker. In each polarised lens, a filter is inserted between 2 pieces of lenses to cut down UV light and reflected light such that only natural light can pass through. Polarised lenses are ideal for outdoor activities such as fishing, golf, skiing and driving.

  • Transitions lenses

    Transitions lenses

    Function as both regular spectacles and sunglasses;
lenses automatically adapt to changing light conditions

Transitions lenses respond to the light around you and change intelligently from clear to dark when you go outdoor and back to clear when you return indoor. With transitions lenses, your standard pair of spectacles can double up as sunglasses and thereby removing the hassle of having to bring an additional pair of sunglasses when you go out.
